N.W.T. DALL SHEEP

Our NWT hunts are located in the heart of the Mackenzie Mountains. The hunting area is 250 miles south of the Arctic Circle, and consists of 6000 square miles of magnificent, untouched wilderness. This area offers a very diverse terrain from large, sweeping valleys and low rolling mountains to high, rugged peaks and ranges. Elevations vary from 3,800 ft. to 7,500 ft. There are no roads or cutlines throughout the area. This hunting area offers miles of pristine hunting, and supports a large population of Dall Sheep and Caribou. Hunters have averaged a 95% success rate on Dall Sheep and Caribou over the last 15 years. Rams taken have averaged 10 ½ years of age, and 37 inches horn length.

For the Dall Sheep and Dall Sheep/Caribou combination hunts, 44 outpost sheep camps are used. These camps are situated along eight major rivers and numerous creeks throughout the area. Many of these camps are used one season every 2 to 5 years. This helps ensure excellent hunting and good numbers of quality animals available.

From base camp, hunters travel by horseback, riverboat, or helicopter to the outpost camps. Sheep camps consist of hunter tents, guide tents, and a kitchen wall tent. From these camps, each hunter and their guide travel to different locations to hunt. On all hunts, guides carry a satellite phone or radio for communications if needed.

The last Wildlife Advisory Board survey estimated there was 600 to 700 rams 7 years and older in this hunting area. Hunters should expect to see 4 to 10 full curl rams during their hunt.

While sheep hunting you will also see numerous bunches of caribou, and an occasional wolf or wolverine. Caribou bulls will be in the velvet until late August. You will also see some non-hunted species such as grizzly bears, black bears, eagles, water fowl, and small game during your hunt.
