N.W.T. CARIBOU

Our NWT hunts are located in the heart of the Mackenzie Mountains. The hunting area is 250 miles south of the Arctic Circle, and consists of 6000 square miles of magnificent, untouched wilderness. This area offers a very diverse terrain from large, sweeping valleys and low rolling mountains to high, rugged peaks and ranges. Elevations vary from 3,800 ft. to 7,500 ft. There are no roads or cutlines throughout the area. This hunting area offers miles of pristine hunting, and supports a large population of Dall Sheep and Caribou. Hunters have averaged a 95% success rate on Dall Sheep and Caribou over the last 15 years.

After the sheep/caribou combination hunts are done for the season, caribou are hunted out of the main base camp. In the later part of September, caribou herds ranging from 4,000 to 15,000 migrate to the flats above Hook Lake. These flats run from 5 miles wide to 25 miles long. There is also a large mineral lick 4 ½ miles from camp which draws caribou from the surrounding area.

You will see large numbers of caribou during these hunts. Horses and packhorses are taken out daily. Much of the hunting day is spent glassing groups of bulls, trying to pick out the best animal. Caribou bulls will be in the hard horn during these hunts. Some wolves are taken on these hunts also.

While hunting caribou, some hunters also take the opportunity to hunt the moose around base camp. For more detailed moose hunting, you will travel out by helicopter and/or riverboat.

This location also offers excellent fishing for arctic grayling and lake trout. Many of the major rivers and creeks are also known for their exceptional fishing opportunities. The caribou hunts are very relaxing, and many non-hunters come along to fish, watch the caribou, and enjoy base camp.
